PERIDOT
Reference stone from the laboratory archive. This page is for species recognition; it is not a numbered GRA report.
The ancient Egyptians mined peridot on the Red Sea island of Zabargad. The stone is gem olivine — typically yellowish green to olive green — and remains a staple in colored-stone jewelry.
On the bench, peridot is separated from look-alike green materials by optical and physical constants. Inclusions and surface features help confirm the story the instruments begin.
